From Slavery to Freedom: The Logistics of the Underground Railroad

You’re invited to join us when Mr. Alvin Q. Corbett presents From Slavery to Freedom: The Logistics of the Underground Railroad on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, beginning at 6:30 PM at the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library, 680 Radcliffe Street, Bristol, PA.

Learn more about local abolitionists and the Underground Railroad:

  • New Jersey served as a gateway for Freedom Seekers (escaped slaves) from the South. Freedom Seekers crossed the Delaware River to reach Underground Railroad (UGRR) stations in Pennsylvania (Bristol), New York (New York City) and Canada (Toronto).
  • Burlington County, New Jersey was of particular significance to the UGRR and the abolitionist movement because it served as a hub for UGRR activities.
  • The twin cities of Burlington, New Jersey, and Bristol Pennsylvania played significant roles in the UGRR movement and its success in the liberation of Freedom Seekers.

Mr. Alvin Q. Corbett is an archivist, historian, and researcher of African American history. Mr. Corbett is the son of Civil Rights leader, Fannie Corbett, and a descendant of United States Colored Troops Civil War veteran, Jack Sherrod. He is a former Vice President of the board for the Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County, NJ; and a visiting scholar with the Rutgers University History Department. Corbett holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University and a master’s from Stevens Institute of Technology.

Corbett is committed to preserving, promoting, and perpetuating African American history and its intersections with religion, gender, and social movements.  He brings history alive by integrating his unique genealogical connections to America’s pivotal social movements.
