Come learn of the 19th century development of Philadelphia through the eyes of three generations of the Barker Family.  Join Tom Wieckowski, Vice-President of the Old York Road Historical Society as he presents this enlightening and entertaining lecture that lays out the rich history of Jacob, Abraham, Anna, and Wharton Barker, their families, and their diverse enterprises during the 19th century, including their struggles for abolition and racial equality. Jacob Barker was the largest ship owner in the United States at the beginning of the 19th centurey and the financier of the War of 1812.  Abraham was president of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, co-founder of the Union League, and an ardent Abolitionist.  Anna was a central figure in the Transcendentalist movement and wife of the co-founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Wharton was a US presidential candidate and international banker honored with knighthood by Czar Alexander in 1879.
