Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was one of the leading figures of early American history. Born in Boston to a family of modest means, he had only a limited education, yet he went on to launch a successful printing company in Philadelphia and become a wealthy man. He then became deeply involved in public affairs and transformed Philadelphia through some significant improvements. He also served as the first U.S. Postmaster General, revolutionizing the colonial mail system.

During the American Revolution, Franklin served in the Second Continental Congress and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. An accomplished diplomat, he was the first U.S. Ambassador to France and helped negotiate the 1783 Treaty of Paris that ended the war.

Ben Franklin's many accomplishments and inventions include the first circulating library, the first volunteer fire company, the lightning rod, and bifocal glasses.
